Ulysse Derrien is a French conductor whose work spans a broad repertoire, with a particular affinity for French music, from well-known works to overlooked pieces by composers such as Lili Boulanger and Florent Schmitt. Through close collaboration with living composers and thoughtful programming, he seeks to ensure that overlooked modern works continue to find a place on the concert stage.
Ulysse recently made his debut with the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra at the Rudolfinum in Prague to great critical acclaim. He was finalist of the 5th Almería International Conducting Competition and a semifinalist of the 21st Khachaturian International Conducting Competition. He has served as assistant conductor for Fabien Gabel with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, and for Tan Dun with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
In 2026, Ulysse will take part in the prestigious Mahler Competition with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and will attend the Tanglewood Music Center as a Conducting Seminarian. He was a Conducting Fellow at the 2024 Aspen Music Festival and participated in the 2025 Järvi Conducting Academy. He has also worked with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra, Athens Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Beijing Central Conservatory Orchestra.
Born in Paris, Ulysse trained at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris with Clément Saunier before moving to New York, where he studies at the Bard College Conservatory of Music with Edward Carroll, completing degrees in music and economics.
