French conductor Ulysse Derrien works across a broad repertoire, combining a particular focus on French and contemporary music with a commitment to bringing underperformed works to the stage. In 2026, he is scheduled to take part in the Ammodo Masterclass with Iván Fischer and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and to attend the Conducting Seminar of the Tanglewood Music Center and the Conducting Academy of the Pacific Music Festival.
Ulysse recently made his debut with the Karlovy Vary Orchestra at the Rudolfinum in Prague to great critical acclaim. He was a finalist of the 5th Almería Conducting Competition and a semifinalist of the 21st Khachaturian Conducting Competition. He has served as assistant conductor for Fabien Gabel with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, and for Tan Dun with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. He was a Conducting Fellow at the 2024 Aspen Music Festival and participant of the 2025 Järvi Conducting Academy. He has recently worked with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra, Athens Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Beijing Central Conservatory Orchestra.
Born in Paris, Ulysse trained at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris with Clément Saunier and at the Bard College Conservatory of Music with Edward Carroll and James Bagwell, completing bachelor degrees in trumpet and economics. In 2026, he will start his master of conducting at The Juilliard School under David Robertson as a recipient of the Kovner Fellowship.
